Of course knowledge work doesn’t work like music, so we should be careful to do too much analogies and expect them to transfer.
Playing Jazz:
- Learn a lot of patterns and techniques that you learn to mix and match during performance
- Lead sheets. More open for flexibility: Rythm, chords, notes, song structure, etc.
- Some jazz musicians memorize tunes too, but I would assume mostly “standards” tunes and their own tunes.
- You can make notes on lead sheets for chord changes you want to try, instead of keeping it all in your head.
- Improvisation with heuristics
- Collaborate on forming and changing the music with other people, both during practice and during performance.
Playing Classical music:
-
Play the notes as composed.
-
Vary speed, “attack” on tones, etc to make it musical. But you don’t change the chords and notes.
-
Collaborate on doing what you’ve been told better.
